Eldorado Gold Keys
The Eldorado luxury coupe was built from 1953 to 2003. There were 11 different generations during it’s 50 year model run, reflecting both the changing tastes and preferences of the luxury car market and the realities of government-mandated fuel economy standards.
The name Eldorado was derived from the words “el dorado”, which is translated “the gilded one” or “the golden one” in English. The name more frequently refers to a legendary city of fabulous riches, somewhere in South America.
As might be expected, the Eldorado had a variety of keys during it’s 50 year model run. Several different key systems were used prior to the letter keys in the 1980’s and 1990’s. The early 80’s Eldorados used either ‘A’ or ‘J’ ignition keys and ‘B’ or ‘K’ door, trunk, glovebox keys. The Cadillac Eldorado used the ‘C’ Key from 1987 to 1988 and the VATS ignition key from 1989 to 2003. The 1987-1990 Eldorado used the ‘D’ key for the door/trunk/glovebox. The 1991-2003 Eldorado used the ‘H’ key for the door/trunk/glovebox.
